Go Huskies!
It was a big opening week for Breckenridge Athletics as our Huskies made their mark across multiple sports. The volleyball teams hit the court strong with varsity storming through an undefeated quad and JV showing promise at Saranac. Cross country runners battled through the Happy Acres Invite, with the boys taking home a first-place team finish and the girls securing a top-five spot. On the links, girls golf impressed in their first home match of the season, finishing just four strokes off the top spot. Meanwhile, Lauralei McGill continued to shine in equestrian, proving sheโs one to watch heading into district competition.
Varsity Volleyball
The Huskies opened their season with authority at Saranac, sweeping all three opponents in Thursdayโs quad. Breckenridge defeated Zion Christian (25-12, 25-18), Carson City-Crystal (25-8, 25-7), and Saranac (25-14, 25-11).
Top Performers:
Liz McCaw โ 18 K, 15 D
Maddie Breece โ 9 K, 5 Aces
BayLeigh Clapp โ 7 K, 14 D, 6 Aces

The Huskies carried that momentum into Saturdayโs Shepherd Invite, where they went 4-1, advancing to the semifinals after going undefeated in pool play.

Equestrian
Breckenridgeโs own Lauralei McGill has been making waves in the arena this summer. Competing in the Michigan 4-H State Horse Show, she finished as a Top 5 Championโa remarkable achievement. McGill now sets her sights on the District Meet taking place this weekend, with hopes of building on her impressive season.
Cross Country
The Huskie runners turned in strong performances at the Happy Acres Invite in Webberville. The boys edged out the competition by four points to capture 1st place as a team, while the girls, competing with a short roster, still managed a solid 5th place finish out of nine teams.
Girls Medalists:

Girls Golf
With eight players on the rosterโfive returners and three newcomersโthe girls golf team is off to a promising start. After opening with a scramble in Perry, the Huskies hosted their first official match at The Ridge in Breckenridge on Thursday. Against six schools, the Huskies finished 2nd overall with a team score of 213, just four strokes behind Hemlock.

Dear Families and Staff of Gratiot and Isabella County Public School Students,
As we start the 2025-26 school year, we want to update you on an important issue in Lansing that could impact our students, staff, and programs in the coming months.
State law mandates that lawmakers approve a K-12 school funding budget by July 1st each year so districts like ours can plan and operate with certainty. That deadline has passed, and no agreement has been reached. Without a budget, there's a risk of a state government shutdown on September 30, which could delay funding that schools depend on to operate.
At the heart of the deadlock is a proposal to redirect dollars from the School Aid Fund โ the fund voters were promised would be dedicated to K-12 education โ to other priorities, including road repairs. Many believe this violates the original intent of the system voters approved in 1994 to provide fair, statewide funding for public schools.
If the Legislature does not pass a budget, districts will miss out on their first scheduled state aid payment on October 20, 2025. For our schools, that payment is a major part of the resources we rely on to:
โข Compensate teachers and staff who work directly with students.
โข Maintain class sizes and student support services.
โข Maintain bus operations and keep classrooms supplied.
โข Fund academic programs, arts, athletics, and student activities.
We cannot operate indefinitely without these resources. The solution is simple: lawmakers should approve a K-12 budget that safeguards School Aid Fund dollars for their original purpose โ educating Michiganโs children.
Please join me in urging our elected officials to reach a quick agreement and keep K-12 funding secure. You can contact your state lawmakers Representative Tim Kelly, Representative Jerry Neyer, and Senator Roger Hauck at http://www.legislature.mi.gov/Legislature/Legislators and explain why timely, protected school funding is important to you and your family.
Our students deserve a stable, fully funded school year. Together, we can guarantee their learning proceeds without interruption.
Sincerely,
Paul Hungerford Thomas Torok Traci Gavenda
